The WMF is proud to announce that we have been invited to participate in the United Through Sport (UTS) International Virtual Youth Festival! This historic event is a unique opportunity for WMF member nations youth teams and individuals to get involved in a global project joining over 60 organisations that have come together in solidarity and unity under the Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympics values.
The programme will see different age groups competing in different fun challenges, where no passports or visas are needed, by participating through an online virtual platform hosted by Bangkok, Thailand.
The festival will also incorporate virtual medal ceremonies, inspirational opening and closing ceremonies and will incorporate a vital platform of education by including; webinars, an opening conference, panel discussions and workshops. Topics of focus will include: Peace through sport, Inclusion and non-discrimination, Athletes’ roles and responsibilities, Safeguarding and child protection among others. Over 100 youth ambassadors, together with the leaders of sport and all participating entities will make a unified call to action towards a better tomorrow.
UTS is an initiative launched in 2019 by the Association of Independent Recognised Sports (AIMS) with its focus being on encouraging youth to become more involved in sports. This one-of-a-kind event is under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Special Olympics, SportAccord and the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAIFS).
Despite the global pandemic, UTS is presenting an opportunity for youth worldwide (10-18 years & U23’s) to compete in an online festival bringing together youths from migrant and refugee backgrounds, international federations, and those with different physical and mental abilities.
Leaders of sport from IOC President Thomas Bach, IPC President Andrew Parsons, Special Olympics CEO Mary Davis and former 8th UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon amongst so many visionary leaders, have pledged their support towards this unique first ever world youth festival.
IOC President Dr Thomas Bach said: “The current coronavirus crisis has proven that sport and an active lifestyle can save lives. With its own campaigns, the IOC has been working since the beginning of the crisis to make it even more evident how important sport is for physical and mental health, in particular in times of lockdown, social distancing and uncertainty. The IOC is excited that the UTS Virtual Youth Festival 2020 is inviting youth of all abilities and backgrounds from the international sports community. We have given patronage to the UTS Virtual Youth Festival 2020 and will also play an active part.”
The Virtual Youth Festival competitions that are available (U10 to U18 age groups):
- Max Fit – focusing on contestants’ strength, power and stamina
- Aero Fit – 3 mins of a choreographed sequence to music in teams of 2
- All Abilities – will be run in partnership with the International Paralympic Committee and Special Olympics.
- Talent (open to U23’s) – youths are invited to promote and encourage a focus on their individual unique talents. The WMF will be hosting a sport-specific Minigolf ‘Trick Shot Challenge’ as part of this!
UTS Virtual Youth Festival Finals
The festival finals will be held on 20th-22nd November 2020, to coincide with the United Nations World Children’s Day, in a hybrid event from Bangkok broadcast to the world. We will see cities around the world join the celebrations and activities.
After the Finals are run there will be Virtual Medal Ceremonies.
We would like to select among our young athletes our own special ‘Athlete Ambassadors’ representing the sport of Minigolf and the WMF organisation, inspiring the youth by sharing their stories, dreams and hopes through the power of sports.
